EMOTIONAL EATING AND WEIGHT: NEW SERIES

Keeping a healthy weight -- and especially losing weight --  is not easy for many reasons.  For one, easy access to extremely tasty high-calorie foods pushes many to overeat.  Living with stress -- a common source of negative emotions -- also makes it difficult to keep healthy habits.  In fact, according to www.webmd.com, up to 75% of overeating is driven by emotions.

Stress in particular has the power to push people toward overeating and other unhealthy behaviors.  Research shows that stress forces people -- particularly those who usually restrain their eating -- to eat more and to choose high-fat foods over healthier ones.  The high-calorie foods serve as self-medication, producing a relief from negative emotions.

Of course, the relief is only temporary -- the effect of chocolate, for example, disappears after only three minutes, according to studies.  However, because the food or beverage reduces a negative emotion, even temporarily, we tend to turn to it again next time we experience the same emotion. Not all food works, though.  When sad, disappointed, irritable or anxious, we don't crave carrots or celery.  Instead we turn to ice cream, chips, cookies or chocolate.  Research shows the palatability of these foods may affect brain chemistry.  Yet, food only numbs the feelings -- without resolving underlying causes.  And, by adding inches to our waistlines, we also pile guilt onto the mix.Shared from "Healthy Living - Patient Information from the ACA"..................................Watch for our next installment:   Become Aware of Your Habits

OVERDOSE OF NARCOTICS ON RISE AMONG WOMEN

The CDC and Prevention reports that between 1999 and 2010 there was a dramatic increase in the number of women who died from overdoses of prescrition painkillers.  Each year 6,600 women (18 daily) die from overdoses of prescription painkillers and 940,000 women are rushed to the ER for drug use and misuse.  Prescription drug deaths are more frequent than those from illegal drug use; they are also more common among women than deaths from injuries sustained in motor vehicle accidents.  Most of the increase comes from the use of hydrocodone and Oxycontin (a long-acting morphine).  The greatest dilemma occurs in patients with chronic pain.  All too frequently, physicians readily turn to hydrocodone (Vicodin or Lortab) for pain relief when patients do not respond to non-addicting pain medications; and once started, it is often impossible to wean the patient off the drug.Narcotics have serious adverse effects that lead to a higher risk of suicide.  Confusion, sleeplessness, memory loss and profound depression are common, as are loss of appetite, severe weakness, nausea and violent gastrointestinal distress.  This constellation of symptoms creates a higher risk of inappropriate medication use.For most people with chronic pain, appropriate management with non-addicting medications, combined with local therapy (injections, heat, cooling or electrical stimulation), physical therapy, chiropractic care and acupuncture can offer great benefit.  Education of the family and the patient about the appropriate use of these dangerous drugs is critical, and psychotherapy to assist with coping skills and relaxation techniques can help alleviate pain substantially.Taken from article LIFELONG HEALTH, written by Dr, David Lipschitz

BEET-ING HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

Beetroot juice has been shown to help people lower their blood pressure within six hours.  The reason it works so fast is that beets contain dietary nitrate, which your body converts to a gas that expands blood vessels and aids blood flow   This simple smoothie from nutritionist Dana White, R.D., contains a heart-health trifecta  of nitrate, magnesium and potassium.  You can find cooked beets in your supermarket produce case or salad bar -- or roast your own!PINEAPPLE - BEET BLASTPrep time:  5  minutes   Serves 21/2 cup sliced, cooked beets1 1/2 cups frozen pineapple chunks1/4 cup celery leaves1 cup vanilla almond milk1/2 cup fresh orange juiceCombine all ingredients in blender and puree until smooth.  Divide between 2 chilled glasses.   (Makes 3 cups)As seen in Prevention magazine - August, 2013

RECIPE FOR AWESOME AGING

The recipe, of course, is healthy whole foods and enough exercise.  HOWEVER, a few specific supplements can help a lot!  Following are a few age-related maladies that can be greatly lessened.by taking whole-food supplements:LACK OF ENERGY:  L-Carnitine and alpha-lipoic acid - this combination may increase the efficiency of mitochondria (energy producers) in cells.    Rhodiola - this herb helps the body resist a variey of stressors and increase energy.JOINT WEAR:  Glucosamine and Chondroitin - Research suggests that these natural chemicals found in joint fluid and cartilage ease arthritis pain, improve joint mobility, and slow joint damage.    SAMe  -  SAMe may help deliver collagen-synthesizing sulfur to cartilage, which will strengthen joints.DEMENTIA:   Turmeric.   This yellow curry spice could play a role in preventing formation of brain plaques associated with Alzheimer's disease, which may be why India has low dementia rates.    Fish Oil:   Omega-3's in fish oil may prevent unhealthy fats from interrupting the creation of brain nerve cells.  This was found in a recent new study.HEART DISEASE:   Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10):  This powerful antioxidant helps maintain healthy blood vessels, support optimal functioning of the heart muscle, and prevent LDL cholesterol from accumulating on artery walls.    Magnesium:  Manesium helps regulate blood pressure and is linked to decreased risk of death from heart disease.  WEAK BONES:   Vitamin D and Calcium.   If you don't get enough calcium from food, take calcium citrate with meals. We have all of the above needed supplements at our office.  Check it out when you visit.

CELIAC DISEASE: LIVING A GLUTEN-FREE LIFE

Celiac disease affects the digestive process of the small intestine.  It has been around since the time of the ancient Romans and is the world's most common genetic autoimmune disorder, affecting an estimated three million Americans and nearly one percent of the world wide population that have had the gene passed down to them.  A 2009 Mayo Clinic study found that celiac disease is four times more common today than it was 50 years ago.  However, it remains so misunderstood that 97 percent of Americans with the disorder are undiagnosed.  The disease can also mimic symptoms of many other conditions such as anemia, fatigue, joint pain and infertility, making it even more difficult to diagnose.  In addition, a large number of people who are affected show no symptoms at all.  Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye and barley.  And these grains have become a staple of many people's diets.  Consuming gluten, even in microscopic amounts, causes the immune system of a person with celiac disease to attack the small intestine and hamper the absorption of nutrients into the body.  For those diagnosed with celiac disease, the only effective treatment is adopting a strictly gluten-free diet.  A program of gluten-free foods can produce symptom improvement within weeks.  Gluten-free options in stores are increasing so it is important to always carefully understand what you are eating.  Celiac disease, unlike a wheat allergy or gluten intolerance, is an inherited condition.  While the symptoms of "intolerance" can be similar, they do not cause permanent damage to the small intestine.  Thus, one can test negative for celiac, but still be "gluten intolerant" or have a wheat allergy.  Symptoms of gluten sensitivity can include fatigue, headache, "foggy mind", numbness of the arms, fingers or legs, and joint pain, along with associated gastrointestinal symptoms.

STEP 2 TO WEIGHT LOSS SUCCESS

STEP 2 to weight loss sucess is -- CONTROL YOUR PORTIONS!!   Portion control is very important when you are trying to lose weight.  Many people keep eating, not because they are still hungry but because the food is STILL THERE!  Don't fall into this trap.  In America, restaurants serve massive portions, offering at least double the calories that you should be consuming at one meal.  Do yourself a favor -- ask for half of the meal to be packed in a doggie bag so you can eat it for lunch the next day. If you consistently exercise but do not control the size of your portions, you still won' t see those great abs because they are hidden by a layer of soft fatty tissue.

A CALORIE IS A CALORIE, RIGHT? WRONG!!!!

The old saying that "a calorie is a calorie" is completely false!  Even if you only eat 800 calories a day, if those calories are from sugary, starchy foods you are going to gain weight.  If your food intake comes primarily from fructose and grains, you are at increased risk for obesity and pre-diabetes, which includes both insulin and leptin resistance, fatty liver, high blood pressure and high triglycerides.  Insulin and leptin resistance in turn form the foundation for virtually every chronic disease you can think of, including heart disease and cancer.  The answer is to turn the food pyramid totally upside down.  Dramatically reduce or, ideally, eliminate virtually ALL grains and sugars, especially fructose.  This in itself will go a long way toward preventing excess fat.  But to be truly effective, you want to be sure you are replacing those refined carbs with vegetables and healthful fats.  NOW you are entering a diet that wil allow your body to shift from burning carbs to burning FAT as its primary fuel.  At this point, weight loss is not the only benefit you'll reap.  Research has shown that this type of diet is an effective prevention and even treatment strategy for cancer.Intermittent fasting is another powerful key that will help you transition your body from obtaining the majority of its fuel from glucose stored as glycogen in your muscles and liver, to the fat stored in your tissues.  This is one of the most effective ways known to burn off excess body fat and eliminate sugar cravings. Check with our office to find out about a variety of lifestyle wellness programs and dietary guidelines that we offer.
